Totally agree with your comments on war. I do not believe in God but I still feel we are honoring killers and rapists in many cases and that we condone war by glorifying it. I don't think it's worth the cost and we shouldn't be asked or forced, to kill or die for our country or anyone else. Yes, they mostly died in vein. God forbid one should say so on Memorial Day in the USA. We have just seen a soldier kill 16 villagers while they were sleeping, most of whom were children, and as many as 20 soldiers are likely to have been involved. Is the military an idea place for savage criminals to reside because it allows them easy access to victims and a free pass to satisfy their brutal instincts?
Good question, Boudicea. I think it was less true when America was a "Christian nation" with a "Christian army," but in our day military recruiters seem to be targeting those with violent or sociopathic tendencies. See earlier blog post, "The Lust of the Eyes."
Wow! I love this piece. It really bothers me to "celebrate" or even observe a holiday for veterans. At church all of those who have served in the military are again recognized as if veterans day was not enough. It annoys me quite frankly because (with the exception of those who were drafted) it was their choice. Most military service people receive generous pay, benefits, preferential job placement, special tax breaks, etc. I believe that military "service" is a high risk career but that's just it a career they chose. I do not see any need for special recognition or for their "observation" to take the place of worship. I am really glad I seen this post, because those who know my feelings believe me to be un-American. I think this country desperately needs God (and take the plank out of her own eye before getting mixed up in foreign policy).

Kevin, I completely agree with you about Memorial Day. It's pretty clear to me.
